Wynyard to Newtown is a walk we often do with our weekday evening group. It is convenient to get to, follows some lovely stretches of Sydney’s harbour and usually ends with dinner together.
We walk at a brisk pace, normally covering about 10 kilometres in two hours. On 23 September, there were around ten of us. On other evenings, the group can grow to twenty or more.
I enjoy this route throughout the year. In winter, we walk much of it after dark. In summer, we are often out around sunset, with time to enjoy the changing light along the water.
From Wynyard to the waterfront
We meet outside Wynyard Station at York Street, Stand N, ready to leave at 6 pm. From there, we head towards Darling Harbour and continue around Pyrmont Bay.
The city is still close, but much of the evening is spent beside the water. The photographs here include the tall ship and waterfront sculpture near Pyrmont, familiar sights on this walk.

Along the bays to Glebe
We continue towards Blackwattle Bay and the Glebe foreshore, passing the Fish Market area and Jubilee Park along the way. There are views across the bays and towards Anzac Bridge as we follow the waterfront paths.
Although this is a city walk, it is a steady evening of walking. We keep a brisk pace with brief stops, so it helps to be comfortable walking for around two hours.

The sunset photographs are from different evenings on the same route. They show why we keep coming back, even though the light and weather are different each time.

Helping late arrivals find the group
With a weekday start, someone is sometimes running late. They often meet us along the way around Pyrmont, after we have already left Wynyard.
On our 23 September walk, we used TrekMeet’s live location sharing, and one attendee was following the leader’s position in real time. This is one of the everyday situations where the feature is useful for our group: someone joining later can see where the leader is while a connection is available.

The screenshot was taken during the walk. It shows 7.8 km walked in 1 hour 30 minutes, with one person following the shared location.
Those are the figures at that point in the evening, not our final distance or finish time.
Dinner in Newtown, or a Redfern finish
We usually finish near Newtown Station around 8 pm. There are plenty of places to eat, and we often stay for dinner or a drink before heading home.
Sometimes we take a different finish through the University of Sydney and continue to Redfern instead. Both places give us a choice of eateries, so we can decide where to stop with the group.
Finding the route in TrekMeet

The route is in TrekMeet’s library as Wynyard to Newtown via Glebe Foreshore. Its reference distance is 10.3 km, with 132 m of elevation gain.
You can add it to your plans or follow the trail in the app. Our usual evening is about 10 km in two hours, and the distance can vary when we choose a different finish.
For an evening walk, bring comfortable shoes, water, weather-appropriate clothing and a torch or charged phone for light. Check the route and choose a pace that suits you.
